1308860536 How do I explain strange events in my home?We have lived in our home for 4 years. There have been times in the past where myself and other family members have "felt" something strange, have felt like we were being watched, have seen flashes or apparitions out of the corner of the eye. Seems to be more kinetic activity lately...things being turned off or on ,windows being opened when no one is home ( and the air conditioning is on). Today, my 16 yr old daughter got in the shower and when she got out, there was 2-3 inches of water on the floor because both hot and cold water faucets were turned on in the bathroom sink, and the plug was pulled so the water overflowed - standing water in bathroom - on floor, in cabinet and drawers and it also flowed into kitchen below bathroom and then into basement below that! After we cleaned the mess up, she went to school. The front door was locked and closed and all lights were off downstairs and I went back to lay down because I have to work third shift tonight. About 11:45 am,I got a call from the school nurse that she had come to nurse's office to get ibuprofen for aches, pains and had fainted - suddenly fell to floor with no warning and hit her head. she then later had signs of possible head injury and had to be taken to ER, but everything was ok. When I came downstairs to get my purse and keys to go pick her up, I noticed that the front door was wide open - I KNOW I had closed and locked it when everyone left this morning. also, all of the lights were on downstairs, which had all either never been turned on or were DEFINITELY turned off when water was discovered to be leaking through the ceiling. Fans that we had turned on the affected areas to help dry were turned off. When we got home, my daughter's window was wide open, which has been closed for over a week because the air conditioning is on due to high temps outside. In retrospect, there are so many days that both my daughter and I are tired beyond explanation - and I felt fine all afternoon, until I came back home from ER with her, and feel like there is a heavy weight on my chest and my legs feel heavy, I also feel like I can hardly keep my eyes open. we all seem to be bickering more, everyone is edgy, and we all sleep a lot. Our three dogs will be hesitant to enter rooms at times, the cat acts strange a lot of times and there is just too many unexplained events to rationalize. Is there anyone who can help me to figure this out..

Updated Sarasota kitchen competes on HGTV

Sarasota broker Brandy Coffey of Coffey & Company toured the three homes along with HGTV celebrity designer Nikki Chu. Like the Halls and the Deharts, the Longs were not allowed to be in the house when the evaluation was done. later, they saw a video of the tour, listened to the comments and were able to respond. they won't know if they are the winning house until the show airs sometime this summer.

"Because I'm in the design business, I got an email from the 'Bang for Your Buck' producers along with other professionals in town such architects and contractors asking us for kitchen nominations for consideration," says Melissa.

"Stephen and I had just finished our project, and I had before-and-after photos. So I downloaded the questionnaire, filled it out, sent off some pictures and didn't think anymore about it," says Melissa. "But within two days, I had a reply saying they wanted to do our house and when could we schedule the production team that was coming from Colorado. it happened pretty fast this past winter over two days, and the show will air this summer, probably June or July. they are supposed to let us know a week before."

The design challenge with this kitchen was to update everything but retain the vintage cottage feel. it was a balancing act. The kitchen had to be modern, but not look modern. Additionally, all the surfaces and flooring had to be kid- and dog-friendly, since the Long's 2-year-old son and his boxer and best buddy run and play in the area.

"The heart pine floors are 80 years old in this house, and I wanted to match them as close as possible to the new kitchen and breakfast room, which had formerly been a porch," says Melissa. "The new kitchen cabinets are antique white, and the counters are a warm granite with a lot of movement. The sink is a farmhouse style in keeping with the cottage look, but it's fabricated in stainless and the faucet is contemporary. The backsplash is tumbled marble, fairly plain and neutral since it's actually a whole wall and I didn't want it to look busy. it adds extra texture. The base of the center island is brown to break up some of the white in the cabinetry and above it we suspended pendants with Edison bulbs (you can see the filaments) to reinforce a vintage look. There's beadboard wainscotting in the breakfast area and an old armoire that conceals my tiny home office. with every big decision and with every detail, such as the stainless feet on the traditional island, we tried to balance an old-fashioned look with up-to-the minute modern convenience."

Although it wasn't part of the evaluation by the HGTV team, the dining room also boasts the old-new look, with a modern chandelier over a rustic table made from window shutters under a glass top that were rescued from the now-demolished El Vernona Hotel/John Ringling Tower and repurposed by Sean O'Malley at Sarasota Architectural Salvage. In the master bedroom, an antique door serves as a headboard.

Stephen Long has a passion for cooking, so he picked out the kitchen appliances and had input into the design of the workspace. He went with stainless-steel appliances, but not high-end brand, and selected an electric range and oven over gas. Stephen especially likes the expansive counters, dramatically lit open shelving, deep drawers for pots and pans instead of conventional lower cabinets, and the stainless-steel range hood.

"We totally reconfigured the room," says Stephen, and now it's a functional U-shape. We recessed the refrigerator, there's good lighting and everything is within easy reach. It's an ideal kitchen for cooking, and within the center island is a wine unit, additional electrical outlets, and both trash and recycling bins."

The original kitchen had a wall between the kitchen and breakfast room, but that's gone now. The kitchen also opens into the dining area. The breakfast room features a copa shell chandelier over a round glass table with two yellow modern chairs and a window seat. There's additional seating at the granite bar, which separates the kitchen and breakfast room.

But what did the real estate expert and the design professional from "Bang for Your Buck" think?

"Well, they weren't crazy about the transition between the old pine floor and the newer pine flooring," says Melissa. "And they thought the marble backsplash could have included a center medallion to give it more importance. but they both thought we did a good job in blending the vintage aspects of the cottage architecture with modern kitchen technology. and they approved of the cabinets and the granite counters we chose."

Both the Realtor and interior designer didn't stop at appraising the kitchen, even though you won't see that part on television.

"They thought our house itself was charming," says Melissa. "Nikki Chu had Brandy tour her through the whole house, and they liked what we've been doing in terms of upgrades since we bought the house in 2008. they take a lot into consideration when they judge the winner — what potential buyers are looking for in a kitchen today, colors and surface materials, and how practical and pretty everything is, and even if the homeowners upgraded beyond what home prices in the neighborhood will support.

"So, now, we'll just have to watch the TV show and see just how much the HGTV experts agreed with our design decisions as compared to the other two homeowners. but, really, we each got the kitchen that makes sense to our lifestyle."

When interior designer Melissa Long and husband Stephen, a financial adviser, decided to renovate the kitchen in their 2,000-square-foot, 1927 cottage on Flores Street near the foot of the north bridge to Siesta Key, they had no idea that their completed project would result in national exposure. but that's how things turned out. The Longs are competing with two other Sarasota homeowners — the Halls of Whitfield Estates and the Deharts of Hillview Street — to see which of the three $60,000 kitchen renovations would earn the homeowners the highest dollar return on their investment if they were to put their homes on the market today.

1307949730 The sinks in my home are blocked? Two of the sinks in my home have blockage. one of the sinks it takes about 8 hours for the water to completely go down the sink. The other sink has complete blockage with no water movement.
I do need to save a few dollars and do not want to call a plumber at this time. How can I unblock both of these sinks myself?

1307258533 I have low Pressure to kitchen sink and bathroom sinks, good in other places?I am rehabbing a townhouse. I get good pressure from places that don't go through the hot water tank. In the kitchen and bathrooms the pressure is low. I put in a new hot water tank thinking that would help (it was rusted too) and the problems persisted. Is their a hidden reducer that needs to be adjusted. All the piping is copper. any suggestions.
