Gary Bogue: Backyard birds: Do they recognize humans who live there?
Going to the woods is going home, for I suppose we came from the woods originally.
As I rounded the corner to the back door, I saw a quail on top of my retaining wall, which is no more than three or four feet from the entrance to my building.
I stopped and just stood there. He looked at me and made quail gurgling sounds and we just looked at each other for some time. Then I slowly started up the two steps into my building and he just as slowly turned and walked away.
I've gotten pretty close to quail before, but never this close — maybe four feet. do you think he might recognize me as the person who puts the bird seed out?
And the fox is still pooping on the same retaining wall, bless his little heart.
I love living where we do!
Yes, I do believe the quail recognized you as the bird seed provider. I suspect a lot of other readers have had similar experiences.
Birds in my own backyard often recognize Lois and me when we're working in the yard. I've been weeding and had a robin pull an earthworm right out of the dirt right next to my hand.
Our male Anna's hummingbird flies down when I'm watering with the hose to "ask" for a shower bath. I blast away with a fine spray while the little guy hangs in the air in front of me and scrubs under his wings.
I bought my hyperactive one-eyed 7-month-old
kitten a Zhu Zhu pet hamster.
Yes, the instructions do say "not for use with live animals," but it looked harmless enough so I gave it to her anyway. She was playing with it out in the kitchen and next thing I knew the hamster had disappeared.
Now if you've ever seen one of these toys, you know they don't go very far before they start spinning around in a circle and they don't really move very well on the carpet at all.
My kitty has a habit of hiding her toys, so I'm sure she must have carried this one off somewhere. why do cats do this and how can I find this toy hamster? It's been lost for about a week.
For those not familiar with Zhu Zhu hamsters, they are battery-powered toy hamsters that squeak and chirp and supposedly look and feel (sort of) like real pet hamsters. At least until the battery runs out.
It's common for cats to stash favorite toys someplace so they can play with them later. have you checked under the bed or couch, behind the TV, or under the sink or fridge?
My manic ex-feral cat, Jasmine, stashes her toys in her litter box, if that's any help. our other cat, Newman, doesn't do toys. it takes too much effort and interferes with his sleeping.
Anyone else have any ideas on where a cat might stash a Zhu Zhu hamster?
Hey, it could be worse. The Zhu Zhu hamster could have hidden your cat.

Thanks for caring.
During a rain shower we experienced a bit of hail. my wife and I noticed a squirrel in the tree in front of our house. I guess he wasn't thrilled to be pelted by the hail so he scooted to the underside of the branch he was on and clung there, safe from the hail. He stayed there until the hail stopped, then went merrily on his way. That's a smart squirrel. (Chip Kozy, cyberspace)
