Bathroom Vessel Sinks

1273159577 Bathroom Vessel Sinks

Bathroom vessel sinks are, as their name suggests, sinks that are utilized primarily in washrooms and bathrooms. What differentiates a bathroom vessel sink from its brethren is its design. Vessel sinks are made to be mounted in a free standing position. of course, like all sinks, vessel sinks need a way to drain water, and so it must be affixed to the counter in some manner. indeed, where a vessel sink meets the counter is primarily where you will find its drain. the drain area, in most vessel sinks, also serve as the mounting point which keeps the vessel sink securely attached to the countertop.

Bathroom vessel sinks are contemporary in nature and as such you will probably find them in use in new homes recently constructed, or newly remodeled bathrooms. They are popular because they afford the designer an opportunity to add a bold stroke to an otherwise ho-hum fixture in the bathroom; after all, how many can one really do design-wise with a ubiquitous fixture like the sink? fear not, the bathroom vessel sinks are here to rescue the day. When executed properly, a vessel sink gives a modern bathroom a focal point to which other design elements can be tied, design-wise, that is.

Though mostly deployed in the bathroom, vessel sinks may also be used in washrooms or any other room that features a traditional sink and faucet arrangement. because a vessel sink is meant to exude a touch of style, its use in a bathroom is probably more effective, as bathrooms have more fixtures and space and elements to which a vessel sink can be associated. in a simple washroom, the vessel sink will stand alone with not a lot of other design elements to play with, relative to the bathroom. Thus, one would most likely find vessel sinks more in the bathroom than anywhere else, though it is very probable that one could be lurking in a modern washroom near you.

Bathroom vessel sinks are constructed from various materials, each lending itself to a specific design theme. Vessel sinks may be made of stone, including granite, marble and travertine, copper, aluminum, glass and even wood. each are in many cases hand crafted by artisans, and so you may run into vessel sinks that are, by virtue of its origin, one-of-a-kind, and truly unique. Those with such a pedigree are often employed as the focal point of the bathroom, doing double duty as both bathroom art and bathroom sink simultaneously.

Just as one would have to constantly maintain a traditional sink to prevent mildew and other buildup, so too must an owner of a vessel sink. in fact, because of the nature of the vessel sink, in particular the manner in which it is mounted on the counter, where it sits above, rather than being mounted on the counter, presents some usage issues, which translates into more diligent maintenance. the main issue facing an owner of a vessel sink is that water splash can occur more easily, resulting in buildup around the vessel sink. if the splash around the rear of the vessel sink is not addressed in a timely manner, over time mineral deposits from the water can accumulate which becomes frankly a pain to clean, particularly if one has granite countertops. But perhaps the biggest concern is when water builds up, there is the possibility of mildew forming. Thus, it would benefit the owner greatly if any water over flow in and around the vessel sink is promptly dried following its occurrence.

Modern Bathroom Ideas

Chic and stylish are seldom the first words that come to mind when you think of your bathroom. for most people, bathrooms are more functional than aesthetic—after all, you don’t use it as much as your bedroom or living room. but modern design is slowly changing all that.

Modern bathrooms have evolved from the basic shower-and-toilet setup to luxury rooms where you can relax for hours. think of it as a luxury spa, except that it’s right in your own home. but the best news is that it’s not as lavish as it sounds. here are some trendy touches that can take your bathroom from drab and dated to stylishly modern.

Vessel sinks

Vessel sinks are placed completely above the counter so that they look like separate pieces. This is a fresh change from traditional sinks, which are often built or integrated into the countertop. The modern look of vessel sinks comes from their sleek designs and bold colors. Look for bright colors that match other elements in your bathroom, such as shower curtains and area rugs. Modern materials such as glass and stone offer excellent wear and will last years of constant use.

Matching faucets

Set off your sink with a matching bathroom faucet. Modern design is about combining function and style, so look for one that’s both stylish and easy to use. The taps that come with most sinks are usually of low quality. Look for one that can withstand everyday abuse. Metals such as brass, copper, and stainless steel are fairly durable and will fit in with the modern theme.

Recessed lighting

Traditional bathrooms use overhead lighting, or a single large bulb that lights the entire room. while this is certainly convenient, it doesn’t do much in terms of aesthetics. Modern bathrooms favor subtle lights that work on smaller parts of the room. use a separate light for your vanity, tub, and shower areas. This makes for a more relaxing mood and a more flattering reflection. use yellow or white area rugs to help disperse the light.

Vanities

The vanity is an important element in modern bathroom design. What was once a simple dressing table is now a personal armoire complete with a sink, counter, shelves, mirrors, and carefully planned lighting—all matching a single theme. Vanity sets are available from most home supply stores, but you can save money by putting your own set together. Pick a modern countertop as your base and let it set the theme for the rest of your setup.

Area rugs

Flooring has evolved more than any part of the bathroom over the years. if you’re still using ceramic tile, consider updating by using modular carpets, cork, or even hardwood. use area rugs to protect your floors from damage and provide warmth in the cold season. just avoid natural materials such as wool area rugs and jute area rugs, as they won’t hold up well to moisture. if you have a small floor space, use kids area rugs—they’re smaller and add a more welcoming look to the room.

Many people feel they are stuck with a colour in their bathroom because of their bathtub - "they are willing to replace the toilet and sink, but see the tub as too much work so they to update their bathroom with a new toilet and sink in the same colour as the old tub."

The result : "Updated bathrooms filled with outdated colours like Dresden Blue, Silver Grey or Fawn Beige -all colours from about 15 years ago!"

Unclogging My Life

1269735915 Unclogging My LifeBy Michael Heaton, The Plain DealerMarch 25, 2010, 5:14PM

PD File PhotoMichael Heaton Minister of CultureSometimes I feel like the unsung middle-aged man. The kind unsung on television, anyway.

Last week after an epic, one-hour battle I unclogged the sinks in adjoining bathrooms. No big deal, right? I'm not a "fix-it" kind of guy, so it was an accomplishment of heroic proportions. a mural depicting it should be painted somewhere. normally I just call the plumber.

But this night I got the plunger out, straightened a wire hanger (my homemade snake) and boiled some water. I live with four long-haired females. I pulled a pound of stuff up out of the drain you might find in a space-alien monster movie. And the water that kept coming up was as black as Texas crude. at one point I even entertained the possibility I'd hit a gusher and was, through a freak of nature, an oil baron.

There was a Three Stooges element (as in so many other aspects of my life) to the ordeal. When I would plunge one sink the sludge would back into the other bathroom sink. I went from one sink to the next pumping the plunger. Halfway through the ordeal I almost lost faith and called the plumber, resigned to spending $3,000 to make everything right.

The reason I bring this up is because it reminded me of my favorite new show this season, a one-hour drama on TNT called "Men of a Certain Age." It's like "thirtysomething," but for men near 50. Ray Romano, Scott Bakula and Andre Braugher play three college friends struggling with marriage, family and careers. And in a more subtle way, death. as middle age comes with a new recognition of mortality.

Of course I watched Romano for nine years when he played opposite my sister in "Everybody Loves Raymond." So I came to this new show and format with a curious eye. In the sitcom, Romano embodied the feckless father caught between stoic dads of the 1950s and the touchy-feely fathers of the new age 1990s.

"Certain Age" raises the stakes considerably in both drama and humor. The show proves it's possible to go dark and funny at the same time. There's plenty of despair to go around. Romano owns a party store but is separated from his wife and two kids because of his gambling problem. Braugher is happily married with kids but works at his overbearing dad's car dealership. Bakula is the Peter Pan actor who is no longer getting roles but still gets all the girls he wants and smokes ganja like a Rastafarian.

The first season was riveting and hilarious. Shooting of the second season begins this July. as a Peter Pan-type, happily married-with-kids guy who gambles too much, smokes pot and works in his dad's business you can imagine how much I relate to this show.

But I am waiting for the episode about unclogging the bathroom sinks.
