The faucet should lift off.

Chrome-plated brass hardware may start to decay after time so you may wish to change that as well. A bucket should be placed under the drain to contain excess water still in the drain. A new stopper may come with your new faucet. if this is the case, you might like to change that also. this will give you a consistent look on your new design.

You will need to wrap your faucet stems with a thread sealer. before inserting the faucet stems into the correct holes install the rubber gasket to the base of the faucet. Don’t worry if your faucet did not come with a rubber gasket. A bead of caulk will do the trick. when you have the faucet in position, you can thread the washer, nut, and mounting nut on to the faucet tailpiece. Tighten these nuts by hand.

You may now attach your supply tubes to the faucet stems. make sure that you apply thread sealer to the shut off valve threads. Tighten the coupling nuts to the supply stems. be careful not to over-tighten the nuts. Reconnect the hot and cold water supply stems.

You are now ready to clean the supply tubes to your new faucet. to do this you need to remove the aerator from the faucet. now turn on the water. you will need to check for leaks while the water is running. if there are none, shut off the water and replace the aerator.

Now sit back and enjoy your new bathroom faucet. you can take pride in the fact that you just installed it yourself.

On a quiet weekend, Karl Benko and his wife, Carrie, sat on the honey-hued alder wood floors of their kitchen, sipped wine and talked.

What he likes about it: they slow-cook meat and vegetables in the oven with a smoke flavor, filling the home with tempting aromas. "I can throw some eggplant and zucchini on a plank and some halibut on another, add some herbs from my garden and have an easy meal that lets me spend time with my wife," he said.

"This is our home; this is what it's all about," said Benko, 43, the former executive chef of the locally owned and operated Peterson's Restaurant. these days he works as a hospitality consultant traveling the country setting up kitchens in fine restaurants, country clubs and new construction sites.

When he's back in Indiana, he likes to relax in his 1930s home with his wife and their son, a.J., 3. he likes to cook, too.

The couple spent nearly a year designing their kitchen that took about eight weeks to complete, and cost more than $50,000.

"We needed the quality of an industrial kitchen but we wanted something that was homier with a residential look," said Benko. French country was more suitable to their tastes than an overabundance of contemporary stainless steel.

They worked with Greg DeWitt, of DeWitt's Craftsman of Fine Wood, Tipton; and Kevin Carter, Classic Construction, Greenfield, to add warmth and comfort to a space nearly doubled in size.

The centerpiece is a French La Cornue five-burner range with double ovens, like the one featured in the 2007 Disney-Pixar movie, "Ratatouille." Purchased locally at Williams-Sonoma, the appliance includes defrosting and convection options and was a perfect fit for the allotted 48-inch space.

As eye-catching as the stove is, the Amish custom-made vent hood is equally interesting, and functional. It was deliberately built 30 inches above the stove to ventilate the home efficiently.

"I didn't want a kitchen that was all stove. It's disproportional," said Benko.

Like bookends on either side of the range are two built-in, slide-out spice racks. DeWitt's designed and installed Kemp Cabinets throughout the kitchen that also feature built-in units for the drawer microwave by Sharp, GE trash compactor, Meile dishwasher and coffee maker, and Sub-Zero refrigerator-freezer -- all purchased from Clark Appliance.

"Two of the best things we added were the trash compactor and the dishwasher," said Benko. "We are saving seven to nine bags of trash a week, and the dishwasher has a built-in water softener, is quiet, and one of the greenest there is."

The countertops are made of golden Mascarello granite -- with black reflective splinters -- from Custom Floors, Fishers. the granite extends to the stove's backsplash for easy cleaning. the area is illuminated by Italian glass lighting by Cambria, purchased online from Studio Italia Design.

"Some people who remodel kitchens, don't use them," said Benko. "The kitchen is the heart of our home. We cook here three times a day and we look at this as an investment in quality of life."

The Best Sink Can Make or Break Your Kitchen

Emily and Martin are newlyweds who just bought their firsthouse.

They were excited to start their lives together, but once theymoved into their new digs all they seemed to do was work. Evenings,weekends — all of their free time was spent renovating the80-year-old house. they were tired — and frustrated. and that’s noway to start a marriage.

But for all of their toil and trouble, the couple put only asmall dent in the much-needed renovations.

What they really wanted was to turn their dark, drab,open-concept kitchen and dining room into a bright, inviting roomfor informal entertaining.

The problem was that they didn’t know where to start — and, likemany newlyweds, they were low on funds. So they asked me to helpthem with a budget-conscious kitchen/dining-room face-lift thatwould reflect their casual, contemporary style.

Because I had to keep dollars and cents in mind, I decided togive Emily and Martin the look of a new kitchen without gutting it.The couple owned stainless-steel and black appliances and hadpainted the walls a grayish-blue, so I chose a design scheme tocomplement the existing elements: a color palette of bold black andclean white, with accents in blue and silver.

Paint goes a long way in making old look like new. I started offin the kitchen by giving the existing cabinets a fresh coat ofpaint — white for the upper cabinets and black for the lowercabinets. I then added jewel-like hardware to provide a bit ofsparkle. to tie the area together, I put up a stunning linearbacksplash in a cool blue glass tile.

I kept the kitchen’s appliances but replaced the single-basinsink with a beautiful, modern under-mount sink with a stunningfaucet that is sure to be a conversation piece. I then replaced thepink countertop with beautiful taupe quartz flecked with silver andblue. I put the same type of quartz on the kitchen island, whichseparates the kitchen from the dining room, and added a few funkystools around it.

Emily and Martin wanted the dining room and kitchen to flow intoeach other. So in the dining room, I incorporated store-boughtcabinetry that has a similar style to the kitchen cabinets. Istacked up white base and glass-fronted cabinetry into two columnsand placed a black leather and chrome bench between them. Above thebench, which also functions as a banquette, I put up a chalkboardwall for messages.

To warm up the dining room, I put in a new walnut table, a fewwood and black leather chairs, and added a heap of blue, brown andgeometrical black-and-white pillows on the bench.

To brighten things up, I put in a host of new lighting: tasklighting over the sink, two pendants over the island and an elegantchandelier in the dining room. I also added ultramodern blinds tothe dining-room window and framed these with crisp white cottonlinen drapes that are banded with black fabric.

After a few final accents and accessories — an area rug, amodern mirror, some lamps and a cool wine rack — the redesign wascomplete.

This dated, dysfunctional space needed an infusion of style andsubstance. So I united contemporary colors, cheerful lighting andlots of function, and turned Emily and Martin’s first house into acomfortable and classic “home sweet home.” now that’s divine!

SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) - A few lessons and one homework assignment at Doris Miller Middle School in San Marcos have changed a family's monthly expenses and everyday habits.

"The purpose is to help transform the students into energy-efficient experts," said sixth-grade science teacher Beth Doege.

She has been teaching a program called PowerHouse, which was created by the Lower Colorado River Authority and sponsored by the City of San Marcos .

It not only teaches energy- and water-saving tips, but every student including Katherine Reeves, 12, investigated what was going on in their own home.

Her family's home on the west side of town was built in the late 1960s and had been due for some energy upgrades.

"Generally, our bills for water and utilities ran around $300 easily," said Corey Casey, Katherine's father.

Armed with a take-home survey to measure energy use, Katherine wanted to start making small changes immediately. She started unplugging her cell phone charger when her phone was not attached. She started turning off the TV when no one was watching and turned lights off when no one was in the room.

The survey results were used to generate a report that outlined ways to save money and energy.

"This is my bathroom under remodel," said Katherine, as she showed us how her family is implementing changes as a result of the program.

The bathroom sink, shower and walls have been removed. new insulation is going in, along with a low-flow faucet and shower head and energy-efficient light bulbs.

"Now, it's going be a really cool bathroom," said Katherine.

A new timer on the thermostat, a water-saving washing machine and a new low-flow kitchen faucet are more changes her family credits for shaving $40 off their latest water and electricity bills.

For Katherine, it is not about the money.

"I wanted to make even a small difference to help the entire world."

Homework: Save your parents money

Families -- it's always families who are buying the latest reincarnation of a popular model by Pacesetter Homes.

The 2,379-square-foot Santiago 4 is one of two show homes by Pacesetter on display in the northeast community of SkyView Ranch by Walton Development and Management.

"It was around 2005 when the first Santiago was designed and it's still one of our bestselling models of all-time," says area sales manager Nancy Smith.

It's not difficult to see why this version of the model has attracted so many buyers.

Good-sized rooms, four bedrooms, two living rooms and no upstairs hallway make the home look even bigger than it is -- all this and it looks good, too.

The lower portions are finished with an Oxford brown, while the uppers are off -white with a hand-rubbed slate stain.

The large island can sit five and holds double sinks and the dishwasher.

The adjoining dining nook is well windowed, with a door leading to the rear deck.

In the great room, the fireplace has a java-stained maple surround with tile on its face.

To the left at the upper landing is the carpeted master bedroom with a large walk-in closet. From here, an archway opens to the ensuite with stall shower and corner tub.

Flanking the tub on one side is a granite-topped vanity with twin sinks, and on the other is a storage cabinet and tower.

At the landing is the large bonus room finished as a family room.

On the opposite wall is the laundry area, and next door is one of the three smaller bedrooms and the main bath.

At the front of the home are two more bedrooms.
